Download Record from Search Result within a field

Within our Work Orders we have a lookup field which is linked to an SFM Search and looks up to the Installed Product object. Our technicians have to add the IP record for every IP they inspect on a customer site - to do this, they search the IP and add to a work detail line within the work order. When using this field linked to the SFM search they can perform an online search to find the IP they are searching for. However, they cannot download it here. They need to exit the WO and go to the Explore menu to download the record in full - it would be far easier if they could download a searched record from a lookup/search field rather than having to exit and go to a specific SFM Search to actually download the record. We cannot add the IP into the Advanced Download Criteria due to the fact that there are 3m+ records of IP within this object and this would make the sync and download unbearably slow.

What is the underlying problem do you intend to solve with this idea?
Ability to download from a search result
How is the problem being addressed today, if at all?
Manually exiting the search and going to Explore > Search to download.

@mark_v3553  When the tech can add the IP record (even the online one) right there on the Lookup, what is the requirement to "download and then add"?

@archana_krishna yes because if an engineer wants to add an IP to child of a WO, he can perform an online search for it and find it, but even when selecting it to add the line it doesn't physically download the record which means subsequent output documents are missing key information (because the record is not downloaded). So the engineer has to stop completing WO and child records, they have to go to Explore and physically online search it again, and then download it. If you are carrying out an online search in any lookup field, surely when found by selecting it - you'd expect that it would download it there and then?
