Customer Self Serve Access

I am interested in exploring how to allow our customers to view the status of their work orders.  Does anyone have insight or experience using SM Customer Communities?  I'd really appreciate understanding whats possible, the security protocols, the possibly of allowing customers to create their own service requests etc.
